I have chosen mixed media/collage as my medium because it allows me to communicate my ideas in a layered and subtle way. Collage enables me to explore the visual manifestation of complex ideas by presenting them in an unusual and multidimensional manner.
My work is characterized by sometimes vaguely discernable layers of text, color and texture. These layers enable me to stack up visual thoughts for contemplation by the viewer. My goal is to have my work resonate on many levels, for the viewer to look intensely, analyze all the visual input and bring his or her own life experiences to the mix.
I like to use materials that would ordinarily be discarded. I am interested in turning the chaos of the detritus of our world into meaningful art with simple, elegant forms. I am not interested in recreating the beauty of our world. I see visual art as a powerful form of communication meant to make us think.
Over the years I have attempted to communicate ideas about such diverse themes as industrial waste, terrorism, building peace, violence and change.
